    Command of Evidence (Textual and Quantitative) on the Digital SAT

    Command of Evidence questions flip the usual reading task. Instead of asking what a passage means, they hand you a claim and ask you to judge what would back it up. On the Digital SAT this comes in two flavors. Textual versions ask which quotation from a work, or which finding from a study, would most directly support (or sometimes weaken) a hypothesis or claim. Quantitative versions attach a table or graph and ask which data point most effectively supports or completes a statement about it.

    The trap structure is consistent: three of the four options are usually true, relevant-sounding, or interesting, but only one bears directly on the specific claim in front of you. A finding can be accurate and still prove nothing about the hypothesis. A data point can be real and still support a different conclusion than the one the question asks about. Winning this skill means being strict about the link between claim and evidence, not about the evidence itself.

    These questions reward a lawyer's mindset more than a bookworm's. If you can state the claim precisely, predict what kind of proof it needs, and refuse anything that doesn't deliver exactly that, the answer usually stands out. The practice questions below cover both the textual and the quantitative versions.

    What the SAT actually tests

    • Selecting the finding from a study that would most directly support or undermine a researcher's hypothesis
    • Choosing the quotation from a literary or scholarly work that best illustrates a claim about that work
    • Using data from a table or graph to support, complete, or evaluate a stated conclusion
    • Judging whether evidence actually bears on a claim, rather than merely relating to the same topic
    • Matching the strength of the evidence to the strength of the claim, including hedged claims with words like "may" or "suggests"

    Strategies that work

    Restate the claim before touching the options

    Find the exact hypothesis or claim in the passage and compress it into your own short sentence, including who or what it's about and what it predicts. Every option must be judged against that sentence alone. Most wrong answers only survive because students hold a fuzzy version of the claim in their heads.

    Predict the winning evidence first

    Before reading the choices, ask yourself what result would prove the claim right. For a hypothesis that dancing shrimp attract fish, the proof is fish responding more to dancing shrimp. Walking in with that prediction turns the options into a matching exercise instead of four separate judgment calls.

    For data questions, name the comparison

    Quantitative claims almost always rest on a comparison: one group versus another, before versus after, or a value versus a benchmark. Identify which comparison the conclusion depends on, then check that your chosen answer states both sides of it. An option that cites only one number usually can't support a comparative claim.

    Eliminate true-but-irrelevant options

    The most tempting distractors are statements that could easily be true and even come from the same study, but that don't touch the claim. For each option, ask one question: if this were true, would the claim be more believable? If the honest answer is "it wouldn't change anything," cross it out.

    Check the stem's verb before the options

    A meaningful share of these questions ask what would weaken or challenge a claim instead of support it. Read the stem first and note which direction it wants, because the choice that backs the claim hardest is the trap on a weaken question.

    Read every choice to its last word

    The hardest wrong answers are right at the start, then slip in one detail the passage never gave you. On this test, a choice that is ninety percent correct is still one hundred percent wrong. Read each option all the way to the final word, and the moment one word goes past what the text actually proves, cross the whole choice out.

    Mistakes to avoid

    • Picking evidence that relates to the topic of the claim but not to the claim itself
    • Choosing a quotation with the right mood or subject matter that doesn't actually demonstrate what the question's claim asserts
    • Supporting a comparative conclusion with a single data point instead of the comparison the conclusion requires
    • Confusing "supports" with "weakens" when a question asks which finding would undermine a hypothesis
    • Accepting evidence that supports a much stronger or much weaker version of the claim than the one stated
    • Committing to a choice whose first half matches the passage perfectly while missing one unsupported word at the end
