Expression of Ideas on the Digital SAT

Expression of Ideas is about revising for a goal. In rhetorical synthesis questions you get a set of bulleted notes and pick the sentence that best meets a stated aim, and in transitions questions you choose the word that fits the logical relationship between two ideas.

It is the smallest Reading and Writing domain and the last one in each module, so it often gets rushed. Knowing exactly what a question is asking for, a specific goal or a specific logical link, is most of the battle.

    Where it appears

These close out every Reading and Writing module.

One Reading and Writing module has 27 questions grouped into four domain blocks in a fixed order: Craft and Structure (about questions 1 to 7), Information and Ideas (about questions 8 to 14), Standard English Conventions (about questions 15 to 20), and Expression of Ideas (about questions 21 to 27). Within each block, questions run from easiest to hardest, and the difficulty resets at the start of each new block.

How one Reading and Writing module is ordered

Based on our analysis of official Bluebook practice tests, each Reading and Writing module groups its 27 questions by domain in this order, easiest to hardest within each group. Difficulty resets at the start of each block, so an early question in a later block can feel easier than the last question of the block before it.
